Plan de Iguala: Special Collections

This Plan de Iguala video was done in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute, Special Collections, and The Catholic University of America History Department. This video contextualizes the Special Collections’ original copy of the Plan de Iguala and how it came to the University was released by the University and the Mexican Cultural Institute.

Latin American Independences: Highlights from the Oliveira Lima Library

This exhibition in the May Gallery was open daily following the Mullen Library schedule. Inspired by the recently developed LibGuide of resources from Special Collections at The Catholic University of America, the exhibition showed items from the Oliveira Lima Library related to the processes of independence of Latin American countries in the 19th Century, including books, prints, manuscripts, and works of art.

Brazil Independence Day: ILAIS and the Office of Global Strategies

September 8th at 6 pm at the Residence of the Ambassador
A recital of Brazilian classical music to open the celebrations of the bicentennial of Brazil. The special presence of Associate Director Livia Lopes at the formal invitation of the Ambassador. She attended the solemnity representing Catholic University, Institute for Latin American and Iberian Studies, and Office of Global Strategies.

Guatemala Independence Day: Institute for Latin American and Iberian Studies and the Office of Global Strategies

September 10th at 5:30 pm at the Museum of the Americas at Organization of American States
A celebration of the country’s bicentennial with an interactive exhibition of murals painted by the famous Guatemalan artist Carlos Mérida. Special presence of Associate Director Livia Lopes at the formal invitation of the Ambassador representing Catholic University, Institute for Latin American and Iberian Studies, Latin American Music Center, and Office of Global Strategies. H.E. Ambassador Alfonso Quinõnes is also an advisory board member of the Department of Economics at The Catholic University of America.

National Migration Week: Center for Cultural Engagement

Book Launch: “Vozes da Independência”

“Vozes da Independência” is a selection of political pamphlets from the Oliveira Lima Library collection published by the Brazilian Senate Press. The ceremony was live-streamed on Youtube on the Senate channel. Dr. Nathalia Henrich of the Oliveira Lima Library participated in a discussion panel.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, with the support of Pragda, is sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Film Festival: Families, Friends, and Freedom. All films are from 6:30-8:00 and will be introduced by the CUA faculty.
